Can Uterine Fibroids Become Cancerous

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths or tumors that form in the uterus. While small fibroids may cause no symptoms, some women experience pain or heavy menstrual bleeding due to larger ones.

According to the Office on Women’s Health (or OWH, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), fibroids are almost always benign. There is a less than one in 1,000 chance that a cancerous fibroid will occur.

If you have uterine fibroids and are concerned about cancer, it’s important to speak with a qualified fibroid professional. American Fibroid Centers can help you understand the potential risks and benefits of fibroid treatment. We proudly help patients in Queens, Fishkill, Harlem, Brooklyn, or West Orange, NJ and Cincinnati, OH with fibroid pain relief and more.

Who gets uterine fibroids?

Several factors increase a person’s risk of developing uterine fibroids. Some women are genetically predisposed to fibroids, and other risk factors include race, obesity, and early-onset menstruation.

Are uterine fibroids cancerous?

Fibroids start as small benign tumors and may stay the same size or continue to develop over time. As we mentioned, larger fibroids are more likely to cause symptoms, like pain or discomfort. Many women experience heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, pain during intercourse, or enlargement of the lower abdomen.

Uterine fibroids are generally not cancerous. The Office on Women’s Health explains that there is less than one in 1,000 chance that patients will have a cancerous fibroid. This rare cancer is called leiomyosarcoma, or LMS.

Will fibroids increase my risk for other cancers?

According to the OWH, uterine fibroids do not increase your risk of developing other cancers, like uterine or cervical cancer. Of course, any growth or persistent unexplained symptoms should be checked by a doctor or primary care physician right away, but the presence of uterine fibroids is not a risk factor for developing cancerous tumors.

This treatment works by blocking blood supply to the fibroids, so they eventually shrink over time. According to our team, about 85 – 90% of women who undergo this procedure experienced a substantial improvement in symptoms.
