What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), also called Uterine Artery Embolization, is a minimally invasive technique whereby the physician injects a small bio-compatible particle or bead into the blood vessels. This procedure is able to stop the blood supply that goes towards the uterus and the uterine fibroids. We call it an embolization because it stops the blood supply to the fibroids, which essentially resolves the fibroids because they're no longer active. It is important to realize that UFE is a very targeted treatment. The embolization is really only affecting the uterus with the fibroids itself, as the uterus does not get a lot of blood supply from other areas.
