What Are Pedunculated Fibroids?

Pedunculated fibroids are non-cancerous growths attached to the uterus by slender stems or stalks known as peduncles. When they develop on the outer wall and project toward the pelvis, they’re called pedunculated subserosal fibroids. When they are located inside the uterine cavity and project inward, they’re pedunculated submucosal fibroids. Peduncles are made of the same smooth muscle as fibroids and range in size from 5 mm to 10 cm in diameter.

Pedunculated fibroids aren’t any more dangerous than other types of fibroids. However, they can place pressure on neighboring organs and cause significant pain and discomfort. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with pedunculated fibroids, don’t wait to get the treatment you need. At American Fibroid Centers, our affiliated physicians in NY utilize minimally invasive-image guided techniques to shrink fibroids and relieve women of their symptoms.

Symptoms of Pedunculated Fibroids

In most cases, pedunculated fibroids are asymptomatic. Some women might experience mild symptoms compared to other types of fibroids. These growths can also cause unexpected, sharp pains when the fibroid rotates on its stem and the movement interferes with blood flow to the fibroid. Common symptoms of pedunculated fibroids include:

  • Menstrual cramps
  • Longer periods
  • Abdominal pain

Causes of Pedunculated Fibroids

Just like with subserosal, submucosal, and intramural fibroids, doctors aren’t exactly sure what causes pedunculated fibroids. Genetics and hormones seem to be the largest contributors to their growth. Fibroids tend to increase in size with higher levels of estrogen and progesterone, such as during pregnancy. Other common risk factors include obesity, family history, and being an African American woman. Although the condition affects up to 80% of women by age 50, fibroids of any type can be treated safely and effectively.

How Are Pedunculated Fibroids Diagnosed?

Diagnosing pedunculated fibroids is done the same way as for other types of fibroids: through a pelvic examination with your gynecologist. In most cases, further testing is needed to provide an accurate diagnosis. Pedunculated fibroids can grow individually or in clusters so it’s important to understand their size, number, and location. The American Fibroid Centers’ affiliated physicians use ultrasound and MRI technology to obtain a clear picture of your condition and help you determine the best treatment option.

Non-Surgical Treatment for Pedunculated Fibroids

If your pedunculated fibroids are interfering with your health and everyday life, you should seek treatment from a specialist as soon as possible. American Fibroid Centers has board-certified affiliated physicians who are committed to helping women with fibroids find relief. They offer Embolización de fibromas uterinos (UFE), a minimally invasive-image guided procedure used as an alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy. UFE offers several benefits over traditional surgery, including no hospital stay, fewer complications, and shorter recovery times. It is also the best option for women who plan to become pregnant in the future, since the uterus remains intact. Contact us at your nearest location in NY for more information about UFE today.
